We’ve got the lowdown on its legality and whether or not you’ll easily be able to find it on the island in 2024.

Is Weed Legal In Turks and Caicos? Overview

As a Caribbean island, it’s surprising that Turks and Caicos aren’t more lax about their cannabis laws. So here’s the rundown that you should know before you go:

  • Is marijuana legal in Turks and Caicos? – No, it is considered a Class A controlled substance.
  • Is medical marijuana legal in Turks and Caicos? – No. Despite the global green wave, medical marijuana hasn’t made its way to legal status in Turks and Caicos.
  • Is Turks and Caicos a marijuana-friendly country? – Yes. Officially, it’s illegal, but the vibe on the ground? It’s much more relaxed. It’s very easy to find. Keep reading for the lowdown.

Turks and Caicos Marijuana-Friendly? The Lowdown From Travelers

While weed remains illegal in Turks and Caicos, the consensus on the ground is that you can easily find and smoke marijuana as long as you are discreet. Obviously, you should not participate in public (duh), but private spaces will work.

Keep in mind that Turks and Caicos authorities are not naive to the presence of cannabis among tourists and locals alike. I haven’t read or heard of any serious consequences being enforced, especially if you’re low-key. But remember that this is not an invitation to ignore local laws. Do so at your own risk.

The Turks and Caicos police enforce their laws to maintain the island’s reputation as a safe and family-friendly destination. Although we at The Highly Informed see marijuana as a safe substance, other countries and territories have not caught up quite yet.

Is it dangerous to buy weed in Turks and Caicos?

As we’ve mentioned in many other posts, purchasing weed abroad, particularly in a country where it is deemed illegal, poses certain risks. However, there are ways to stay safer while participating. I’ll share them in a bullet list below:

Here are some tips to stay safe with weed in Turks and Caicos:

  • Be discreet. Do not smoke in public spaces.
  • Try purchasing from trustworthy sources. Although it’s impossible to determine who is worth trusting (as I’m sure you’re *just* meeting most people on the island), I recommend asking those with whom you have some personal connection. This includes resort staff, restaurant workers, drivers you’ve hired in advance, etc. Again, there is no way to weed out the perfectly safe connections, but it can be better than finding cannabis randomly on the street.
  • Look on Reddit for any personal recommendations for hookups.
  • Thoroughly inspect your weed before smoking. You guys know what it’s supposed to look like. If it seems fishy, don’t smoke it.

Is the cannabis high quality in TCI?

This will really depend upon who your connection is. If you find a hookup on the beach, you’ll likely smoke rag weed. But there are some high-quality strains on the island worth looking for.

We’ve heard from many people that the taxi drivers (particularly the ones who work at resorts) are accommodating in finding quality weed. That said, this is just hearsay.

What’s the price of marijuana there?

Marijuana ranges in price depending on your source. In TCI in particular, you’ll likely pay between $15-$25 per gram.

Is it legal to fly there with cannabis?

No, it is not legal to fly to Turks and Caicos with weed. Many people have successfully flown there with edibles in their carry-on, but again, this is illegal, so do so at your own risk.

Is CBD legal?

CBD is also illegal in TCI. We thought this was strange, considering Turks and Caicos is a territory of Great Britain, and it’s completely legal there. But it is illegal in TCI.

A Final Toke

Cannabis is widespread and readily available on the island of TCI, but that doesn’t change its legal status. Participate with caution and respect for local laws. And above all, enjoy your time on this beautiful Caribbean island.
