During our trip to Easter Island, we asked about the cannabis scene, and a reliable local told us that marijuana is broadly accepted among the islanders. He shared that many locals engage with cannabis and assured us that we likely wouldn’t encounter any problems.

So, although cannabis is only decriminalized, it is widely tolerated and integrated into local culture.

Is medical marijuana legal in Easter Island?

According to Chilean law, medical marijuana is legal. This extends to Easter Island as well, however, there aren’t any medical marijuana dispensaries on the island (that we know of).

Chilean lawmakers have been upfront about their decision, stating that medical marijuana should be homegrown and consumed in private. Smoking weed in public is prohibited.

The cost of cannabis can vary depending on your source. We had the opportunity to share a joint with a local, so we didn’t have to pay. However, he indicated that prices could fluctuate between $15-30 per gram. As a visitor, expect the price to lean towards the higher end of that range.
